Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order

The 1st October 2006 saw new fire laws come into force in England, Wales and Scotland. In England and Wales the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order now applies, whilst in Scotland, the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006 and Part 3 of the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 applies. On the same date, all other existing fire safety legislation was repealed.
In all cases, the aim is to reduce avoidable fires by creating a single regime applying to all premises, which is based on risk assessment and fire prevention and mitigation measures. This means fire risk assessments must be performed on all non-residential premises used or operated by employers, the self-employed or the voluntary sector.
